Working with Storage Files

Storage files allow you to easily transfer the contents of SMS Studio files and settings. Storage files can be used for making and restoring backups, for transferring data to another SMS Studio installation, or for transferring data to a new version of SMS Studio.

Storage files can contain two types of components:

Saving to a storage file

The Save to Storage option from the File menu in the main window opens the Save to Storage dialog. This dialog displays a list of items that can be saved into a new storage file. After selecting the items you wish to save and clicking the OK button, you will be need to specify the name of the storage file. Finally, a new storage file with a specified name will be created containing the data corresponding to selected items.

Loading from a storage file

The Load from Storage option from the File menu in the main window lets you load data from an already saved storage file. After selecting the storage file, the Load from Storage dialog displays a list of items that were saved in the storage file. After selecting the items you wish to load and clicking the OK button, SMS Studio will load the selected data from the storage file.

Note that prior to loading the "Main files and settings" component from the storage file, all the main tables (Connections, Accounts, Contacts, Inbox and Outbox) should be empty. Otherwise, SMS Studio will ask you to backup and clear the contents of these tables.

When you load a service from a storage file, it will be loaded into memory and will not be automatically saved to disk. You can use the Save All option from the File menu to save newly loaded services.
